Little Sleep Big Dream
Maarten Van Cauwenberghe
2022
Maarten Van Cauwenberghe, together with choreographer/dancer Lisbeth Gruwez, forms the internationally acclaimed Voetvolk dance company. Van Cauwenberghe is the resident composer. Like the rest of the world, he spent March 2020 at home. It was a forced break that he took advantage of to make his first solo album in his home studio, ‘De Genotsgrot’.
The songs on Little Sleep Big Dream originated during Voetvolk’s many tours. They came into being somewhere en route: in airports, train stations, lobbies, backstage, hotel rooms and taxis. Then they matured in thoughts, heads, hearts and fingers, with the instrument as their final destination.
While Van Cauwenberghe’s work for dance and theatre is fairly avant-garde, the music on Little Sleep Big Dream is the opposite. It is a musical dream, a journey into an emotional landscape where anything is possible. The tracks are characterised by simple song structures, acoustic guitars and are entirely instrumental. Warm synthesizers produce sound waves that gently wash over the listeners.
Little Sleep Big Dream is a soundtrack to a film that is yet to be made. The tracks sound part mysterious, part seductive, part sleepy and part perfectly tender. They alternate between (desert) blues, folk, pop, electronica, exotica and ambient. The album is a nod to the past, based on a bed of futurism.
Van Cauwenberghe cites Brian Eno, Neil Young, Can, Air, Charles Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg, Massive Attack, Tinariwen… as his most important influences. He composed all the tracks himself and recorded the whole album from beginning to end. He found the ideal mixer in Mark Nevers (Bonnie Prince Billy, Lambshop).
